A sari is a timeless classical dress worn by Indian women over the centuries. Sari is indeed the traditional attire of Indian women. Though the sari wear is conservative it does give a very sensuous feminine look to Indian women. A Sari which is made of six-yard long cloth is worn by women in different styles to enhance their beauty. Women in India wear saris in different ethnic styles according to their tradition and culture. Saris worn by Maharashtrian women are quite different from saris worn by Bengali, Gujarati, Tamil, Malayalee and Telugu women. Saris differ in style, ethnicity and looks which all add up to the sensuality and beauty of the Indian women.
Thanks to Indian cinema, over the years, sari wear has undergone a sea change in India. Bollywood has come up with the best of style statements in saris. Right from the days of early '70s to late '2000s there always was a boom for designer saris across the nation. Hot actresses like Jaya Bhaduri, the eternal dream girl Hema Malini, gorgeous Rekha have all added grace to the sari wear in a number of bollywood movies mystically enhancing the sensuality in them. But hot actress of yesteryears Mumtaz gave a different fashion statement in saris by wearing low-neckline blouses complementary.
Later sensuous beauties Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit gave an iconic status to the sari wear. Sridevi's hot dance to 'Kaate Nahin Katthe Din ye Raat' from 'Mr. India' in chiffon sari and Madhuri Dixit's kind of saris in 'Hum Apke Hain Kaun' have become a sort of fashion statements in sari wear. The legacy of sari wear by Indian actresses has been smoothly carried forward by leading actresses of today’s generation like the reigning queen of bollywood Aishwarya Rai and hot bollywood actresses Rani Mukherjee, Kareena Kapoor and several others who have added their own fashion statements to sari wear. Irrespective of the designs and colors in saris, every actress in bollywood has worn a sari below her naval subtly exposing the girth of her waist. This has indeed enhanced the sensuality of Indian actress in a better way - better than the skimpy western outfits and it would not be wrong to say that an Indian actress in a sari is a perfect answer to her Hollywood counterpart in a Bikini. With the new breed of designer saris an Indian actress can now look hot, sexy, trendy, cute and beautiful.
The sari culture in Indian cinema has transformed over the years with designer saris replacing the more traditional ones. New, Young and hot actresses like Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Shrama and Katrina Kaif all have embraced the sari culture in their movies and they all look stunningly hot and beautiful draped in saris exclusively designed to suit their bodies and personalities. Sari wear in bollywood is here to stay for a long long time with new designs and styles.

About an Indian Sari:
A sari or a saree or shari is a garment widely worn by women in India and other South Asian countries. A sari is basically a strip of unstitched cloth ranging from 4 to 9 meters in length. The sari is draped over the body of a female in various styles. The most popular sari style wrapped around the waist, with one end then draped over the shoulder baring the midriff.
The sari is usually worn over a petticoat with a blouse known as a choli or ravika forming the upper garment. The choli has short sleeves and a low neck and is usually cropped, Cholis may be "backless" or of a halter neck style. The Cholis are usually more dressy with a lot of embellishments such as mirrors or embroidery and may be worn on special occasions. The sari is popular female attire and is worn by women both in South India and North India. |

Styles of Indian Sari Draping:
Nivi: This style of draping is worn in Andhra Pradesh; besides the modern nivi, there is also the kaccha nivi, where the pleats are passed through the legs and tucked into the waist at the back. This allows free movement while covering the legs.
Gujarati: This style of sari draping in quite popular in Gujarat. This style of draping is quite similar to Nivi and the only difference is that the loose end is draped over the right shoulder rather than the left, and is also draped back-to-front rather than the other way around.
Dravidian: This style of sari draping is popular in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu; many feature a pinkosu, or pleated rosette, at the waist.
Maharashtrian/Kashta: In This style of sari draping the center of the sari is placed at the center back, the ends are brought forward and tied securely, and then the two ends are wrapped around the legs. This style is worn by Brahmin women of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
